Gaming company Ubisoft urged its customers to change their passwords yesterday, following a security breach that exposed encrypted passwords, usernames and user email addresses.
Ubisoft, the third-largest gaming company in the United States and Europe, said that it reacted instantly to close the breach and that no financial information had been accessed, but nonetheless encouraged users to alter their Ubisoft password as well as any similar passwords that they may use on other websites or services.
“Passwords are not stored in clear-text but as an obfuscated value,” Communications Manager Gary Steinman (@GarySteinman) wrote on the company’s blog. “These cannot be reversed but could be cracked, in particular if the password chosen is weak. This is the reason we are recommending that our users change their password.”
Steinman’s statement is a reminder of how difficult it can be to protect information online, especially when a password is weak or ineffective. In instances like the Ubisoft breach, those with more difficult or complex passwords will be less likely to have their information hacked than those who use a simple one. Using a password manager that generates complicated passwords without requiring users to remember them is a great way to protect oneself from identity theft online, especially when dealing with an account that is connected to financial information.
