Common Tips Can Help Boost Password SecurityPosted by Petr Pinkas Jun.20, 2013 in Passwords & Security
Consumers who want to ensure their online security is not in jeopardy must focus on their passwords. If these credentials are not effective in keeping malicious parties from accessing their various accounts, people are more prone to suffering identity theft and other problems if personal and sensitive information is obtained from outside sources.
A THV 11 report highlighted some ways that Internet users can improve their passwords. The news source suggested that people employ security questions that cannot be guessed so easily. Passwords should also not be easy to guess, especially given the fact that some consumers have “password” and “123456” as their credentials.
Although some websites do not allow users to employ the spacebar when creating passwords, this is something people should take advantage of when possible. THV 11 said that those trying to guess a person’s password may not even think to try the spacebar.
The report also encouraged consumers to employ long passwords, generally between 12 and 14 characters to make it difficult for malicious parties to take advantage of short phrases. This is undoubtedly an effective practice, but if people have dozens or more unique credentials, remembering all of this information is not easy.
This is where a tool like a password manager can come into play, generating passwords that are not only complex, but do not require users to remember all of this data. Instead, consumers are only required to remember a master phrase for the program.
No one should put his or her information in a precarious position because of ineffective passwords cannot neglect the importance of this type of protection. Whether someone is accessing email, banking or social media websites, a password manager can keep consumers safe from malicious parties looking for opportunities to take advantage of unsuspecting users.
